Aerial Bold: Kickstart the Planetary Search for Letterforms!, ein verrücktes Projekt bei Kickstarter:

Das Projekt sammelt Geld, um aus der Topographie der Erde eine Typographie zu machen. Luftbilder sollen nach Buchstabenformen durchsucht werden und daraus soll ein Zeichensatz entstehen:

[…] Aerial Bold is the first map and typeface of the earth. The project is literally about „reading“ the earth for letterforms, or alphabet shapes, „written“ into the topology of buildings, roads, rivers, trees, and lakes. To do this, we will traverse the entire planet’s worth of satellite imagery and develop the tools and methods necessary to map these features hiding in plain sight.

The entire letterform database will be made available as a “usable” dataset for any of your art/design/science/textual projects and selected letterforms will be made into a truetype/opentype font format that can be imported to your favorite word processor. […]

Der Durchschnitt aller Zeichensätze

Die Aktion von BIC, über die ich in Spannend: auf der Suche nach der globalen universalen Handschrift berichtet hatte, hat etwas von einem Zeichensatz, der der Durchschnitt verschiedener Handschriften ist. Einen ähnlichen Ansatz, nur mit klassischen Zeichensätzen, hat Moritz Resl mit seinem „Average Font“:

[…] This experiment shows what a font would look like if it consisted of all typefaces installed on my system. I wrote a little application that would draw every character from a to z using every single font with a low opacity. In total there are over 900 typefaces in my library. I didn’t exclude the ugly ones. […]

Digitaler Zeichensatz der eigenen Handschrift

Bei golem las ich von der Software Scanahand. Sie erlaubt es, aus der eigenen Handschrift einen eigenen digitalen Zeichensatz zu erstellen. Wie das funktioniert?

[…] Simply print a template, draw all of the characters using a black marker or felt-tip pen, and scan your drawing. Scanahand will build your font, and install it on Windows, ready for you to use. You don’t need to use additional graphics software, but Power Users and Hobbyists alike can use Scanahand along with their favorite graphic drawing software to create or modify each character of their font. Das Programm ist nach der kostenlosen Testphase aber nicht ganz billig. Leserin Nimrodel At schrieb in der Facebook Gruppe „Notizbücher“, dass es auch ein kostenloses Werkzeug gibt: myscriptfont.com:

Helvetica im Video

Mein Kollege Sebastian twitterte mir den Link auf einen Trailer zu einem Dokumentationsfilm über den Zeichensatz „Helvetica“, den ihr sicher alle kennt. Auch im kurzen Trailer sieht man beeindruckend viele Beispiele für die Verwendung der Helvetica (Wikipedia).
Der eigentliche Dokumentationsfilm hat sogar eine eigene Homepage und ist bei amazon (Werbelink) für fast 26 EUR zu haben.
